The Dog Phobia Problem:
Researchers wanted to find out if people suffering from phobias can be rid of extreme fears in an amazingly simple fashion. To test this, they studied a group of nursery-aged children who were terrified of dogs.

The Results:
The researchers came up with a simple solution. This solution was so effective that it produced drastic changes in the reactions of the fearful children. After only four days, 67% of them were willing to climb into a playpen with a dog and remain confined there petting and scratching the dog while everyone else left the room.
What was the solution?

The Solution:
All the researchers needed to do was to get the children who were afraid of dogs to merely watch a little boy play happily with a dog for 20 minutes a day. Surprisingly, after four days 67% of them exhibited positive attitudes towards dogs. Moreover, when the researchers tested the children's fear levels again one month later, they found that the improvement had not diminished during that time; in fact, the children were more willing than ever to interact with dogs. (Bandura, Grusec & Menlove, 1967)

But Why?
The findings above is not as significant as the understanding as to why and how people respond. When do they say “Yes” to a request and how do we increase the probability of that happening significantly? The science behind how to influence and persuade to get the results you want is covered in our high-energy workshop, the Principles of Persuasion.
